Residency Training

Accredited residency programmes preparing doctors for the fellowship examinations of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African postgraduate colleges.

Overview

UNTH is one of Nigeria's principal centres for postgraduate medical training. Residents rotate through structured junior and senior levels under consultant supervision, combining clinical service with formal teaching, journal clubs, mortality review and dissertation work.

Programme structure

  • Junior residency leading to Part I fellowship examinations
  • Senior residency with subspecialty rotations and dissertation
  • Weekly departmental academic sessions and clinical meetings
  • Supervised research culminating in a dissertation
  • External rotations where required by the college curriculum

Entry requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent registrable medical qualification
  • Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria
  • Completion of housemanship and national youth service or exemption
  • Success at the hospital's selection examination and interview
