Health Insurance and NHIA Guide
A simple guide to using National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) or HMO cover at UNTH.
Four steps to use your cover
- 1
Check your cover
Make sure your NHIA or HMO enrolment is active. Your HMO can confirm this by phone or through its app.
- 2
Get a referral
For planned (non-emergency) care, UNTH as a teaching hospital usually sees insured patients on referral from their primary healthcare provider.
- 3
Obtain an authorisation code
Ask your HMO for an authorisation (referral) code for the UNTH visit. Bring it with your enrolment card and referral letter.
- 4
Register at UNTH
Present your documents at registration. Staff will confirm what your plan covers and explain anything you may need to pay yourself.
Planned care
Clinic visits, tests and operations booked in advance. Usually need a referral and an HMO authorisation code.
Emergency care
Go straight to A&E. Do not wait for a code. Tell your HMO as soon as you can.
Common questions
What if it is an emergency?
Go straight to Accident and Emergency. Emergency care comes first; you or a relative should inform your HMO as soon as possible so the visit can be authorised.
Will everything be free?
Not always. Insurance plans differ, and some medicines, tests or procedures may not be covered. Ask your HMO and the UNTH insurance desk before treatment where possible.
Where is the insurance desk?
The location and opening hours of the UNTH health-insurance desk are awaiting confirmation from the hospital. Until then, please ask at registration or call the hospital.
Which HMOs are accepted?
The confirmed list of HMOs accepted at UNTH has not yet been published on this website. Your HMO can tell you whether UNTH is on its provider list.
I am not insured. Can I still be seen?
Yes. Patients without insurance pay for services directly. If you are worried about costs, ask to speak with Medical Social Works.
